Music Therapy for Muscular Dystrophy

At Muse for Life in Sandy Springs Atlanta, we give private & group music therapy sessions for individuals with muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy is a group of inherited disorders that involve muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue, which get worse over time. Symptons vary according to specific illness type. In some cases, all of the muscles may be affected, where as in other cases, only specific groups of muscles may be affected, such as those around the pelvis, shoulder, or face. Specific muscle groups are affected by different types of muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy can affect adults, but the more severe forms tend to occur in early childhood.

Music therapy for muscular dystrophy considers orthopedic assistive tools and devices that may aid in both mobility and successful outcomes within sessions.

MusicTherapy Goals for Muscular Dystrophy

Goals for using music therapy with patients who have muscular dystrophy vary according to illness type, but, generally, three primary therapeutic areas are targeted. The primary goal of treatment is to control symptoms. The 3 target areas are:

*Motor Skills-

To help patients maintain muscle strength and function,

To stay as active as possible

*Cognitive Skills-

To develop and maintain cognitive skills related to self determination, problem solving, memory, strategy, and information processing.

This goal is more immediately applicable to individuals who have cognitive development issues as a result of the muscular dystrophy.

*Emotional Skills-

To ease the stress of illness by providing healthy outlets, leisure activity, and distraction.
